Don't Shake the Spoon Volume 4 - Reflections

We asked Don’t Shake the Spoon writers how they felt about being published. This is what they had to say….

For the first time in all of my years of being a student I submitted to be published, and my work was accepted! I received my letter of acceptance in class and wanted to cry not just for my sense of accomplishment, but because being in prison we are often invisible. I had been part of a writing program and had never had the courage to submit my work. As I looked around the room, some people shaking their heads no, I could finally shake that feeling of not belonging in my seat. I was good enough, I had a breaking interview, and the concept of Restorative Justice is going to take the country to a whole different level

As I look back over my journey in writing, I have come to realize how important change is. I have learned through E4C how critical the process is. In the beginning I would give birth to a piece but I wouldn’t let it grow. Now I have learned to nurse it, feed it, and allow it to grow into something beautiful.
