Exchange for Change provides opportunities for creative and intellectual engagement.
We believe in the value of every voice, and we give our students an opportunity to express themselves without the fear of being stigmatized. When everyone has the ability to listen and be heard, strong and safe communities are formed.
Collaboration is our emphasis. Students on the outside anonymously partner with imprisoned writers to foster empathy and create opportunities for individual and social change, allowing both sides to learn from the knowledge and experiences of their writing partners, all while realizing the value of events in their own lives.
With a pen and paper, students can become agents of change across different communities in ways they may otherwise have never encountered.
The nonprofit Exchange for Change teaches writing in prisons and runs letter exchanges between incarcerated students and writers studying on the outside. By preparing prisoners for their reentry into the outside community and preparing that community for their return, Exchange for Change provides vision and understanding on both sides of the fence.
