DAN WYNNE
BOARD MEMBER
Dan Wynne first identified teaching as a possible career while working in summer camps for at-risk kids in Minnesota, leading him to enter the education program at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at Hamline, Dan studied English and Education and completed an internship in both St. Paul Public Schools and Escola Pan Americana da Bahia, Salvador, Brazil. Following his dual-location internship, Dan took a position teaching IB English at Inter-American Academy in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In 1993, Dan moved to Miami, Florida and began teaching in alternative settings with the Educational Alternative Outreach Program (EAOP). With EAOP, Dan has taught students in juvenile justice settings and coordinated transitional and educational support for students in correctional settings. Always taking a leadership role, Dan participated in the following innovations:
- He functions as the Department of Juvenile Justice contact for Miami-Dade County public Schools.
- He served as a Juvenile Justice Education Enhancement Program (JJEEP) peer reviewer for juvenile justice educational programs throughout the state. He has come to be regarded as a state and national leader in juvenile justice education.
- He participated as a fellow and ambassador for the Unjammed program sponsored by the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings (CEEAS). In spearheading Unjammed, Dan ushered Miami Youth Academy as the first juvenile justice program in Florida to adopt the Unjammed and GSuites programs.
- As an ambassador for CEEAS, Dan trained and mentored colleagues nationwide in the process of instituting Unjammed in juvenile justice settings.
- He was named the 2018 Florida Juvenile Justice Teacher of the Year.
- He is the M-DCPS representative on the Circuit 11 Community Reentry Board, a multi-disciplinary team of professionals tasked with the reentry of students to Miami-Dade County from commitment programs throughout the State of Florida.
- He developed the One Stop database, a database shared among transition professionals, and reports data for the Together for Children grant.
- He represents the school district for juvenile justice related programs on the Together for Children Standing Grant Committee.
- He has trained educators on juvenile justice education and transition in local, statewide and national settings.
- Currently, Dan serves as the department head and assistant Juvenile Justice Education manager for juvenile justice programs in M-DCPS.
Dan enjoys visiting with his three grown children and two grandchildren. When not busy with work or E4C, Dan likes to tinker with classic cars and motorcycles.
