A spotlight on our newest board member: alexa klein

Welcome to the Board: Alexa Klein

Exchange for Change is proud to welcome Alexa Klein to our Board of Directors. A criminal defense attorney with a deep commitment to rehabilitation and justice reform, Alexa brings both professional expertise and a genuine passion for creating second chances.

From early on, Alexa knew she wanted to be a defense attorney. “I believe strongly in reforming the criminal justice system,” she shared. Since joining the law firm Black & Strubnik in 2022, Alexa has worked alongside legendary defense attorneys Roy Black and Howard Strubnik, gaining firsthand experience representing people who have become entangled in the criminal justice system.

Her experience has shaped her belief that real reform begins with rehabilitation. “One of the best ways to stop the cycle of crime is through rehabilitation,” Alexa explained. “Most systems don’t focus on that enough. Programs like Exchange for Change bring attention to the human side of incarcerated people, and that’s incredibly important.”

Alexa first learned about Exchange for Change through a former law student who volunteered with the program while attending the University of Miami School of Law. The work immediately resonated with her. While in law school, Alexa participated in a program called Street Law, where she taught legal lessons to middle school students in Hialeah Gardens. Teaching, mentorship, and community engagement have long been central to her approach to the law.

Initially hoping to volunteer as an instructor, Alexa was instead invited to join the board — an opportunity she welcomed wholeheartedly.

As a board member, Alexa is most excited about helping Exchange for Change expand its reach. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to grow the program across Florida and reach as many incarcerated people as possible,” she said. She also emphasized the importance of community involvement and shifting public perception. “It’s very easy to write people off,” Alexa noted. “One of the ways to make the world a better place is by giving people second chances — and by seeing people as humans, not just as their mistakes.”

We’re thrilled to have Alexa Klein join the Exchange for Change board and look forward to the insight, compassion, and leadership she brings to our mission.
